How I Became an Artist
I've been working as an artist since 2005. I didn't go to art school but I was always interested in drawing and doodling when I was younger.

At school I studied technical drawing and graphic design and that's what I use for the technical foundation of my work.

I studied Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College and Economics and Philosophy at the London School of Economics and after graduating I decided to work for myself rather than go the traditional route of the 9-5 office job.

When I first started out I didn't have any intentions of becoming an artist. In the early days I just kept lots of doodles and sketches of things that interested me and caught my imagination - like the ones in the pictures below:

After doing this for a while I was showing them to someone one day and he suggested that I colour them in and show them in an exhibition.

So I went out bought some coloured pens and few pads of paper and started on my first collection of pieces.

I had my first exhibition at the RISC Global Cafe in my hometown (Reading) and have continued creating and expanding my body of work ever since:

I was also commissioned by the gallery space to paint a mural and since then have been working to create a trail of murals not only in and around my hometown, but further afield as well...

After my first exhibition (which featured mostly only drawings) I started experimenting and expanding into other media including acrylic, oil and chalk pastels, collage and oil based colour pencils:

Art for Businesses and the Home
In 2012 I started Michael Carlton Art - an art company that provides homeowners and businesses with customised original artwork and home installations.

The idea behind the company is provide homeowners and businesses with a bespoke collection of art and original installations that brings a personalised aesthetic to the home or business premises - a mixture somewhere between interior design and a curated exhibition.

The idea is to also use the art to bring a colourful and positive vibration to the installation space and to uplift and inspire the people living and working in the environment:

Art in Amsterdam
I'm currently living and working in Amsterdam, Holland and have just recently started exhibiting and creating my work in The Netherlands.

So far I've painted 2 murals in the city and am in the process of expanding the mural trail through the
Amsterdam Art Trail...

Below is a video of the first mural I created in Holland at the Gouden Leeuw in the Amsterdam Zuid-Oost area:
