Ink Drawings
|
I use Letraset Promarker pens for my ink drawings because they have a very bold and vibrant colour tone. They're also very easy to work with and come in a wide range of distinctive colours:
I started creating drawings like this back in 2005/2006. At the time I was doing a lot of black and white doodles and mind-maps in sketchbooks, and then I discovered these marker pens and started using them to colour my sketches in:
My ink drawings are like windows into my imagination as I let whatever happens to rise from my subconscious mind take form on the page... I've put a video of an ink drawing in progress below so you can get an idea of how they come together:
Music and Pictures
As well as expressing what's in my imagination I also aim to make my pieces look like visual pieces of music. In the video below I've made a slide-show of pieces along with some music to create a synaesthesic connection between the music and the pictures:
Ink Drawing Questions
Over the years I've had a lot of interesting questions about my ink drawings so I've put the most popular ones below:
Q: How long does it take to create one of your drawings?
A: It depends on the size - if it's a small one, say A5 size, then it take between 3-5 hours depending on the style of the piece. Larger pieces can take up to 20 hours or more to complete.

Q: Do you plan your pieces before you create them?
A: Most of the time I don't. The majority of my pieces are improvised so I make them up as I go along... one exception is a piece called Pyramids which I did a small version of and then recreated the same piece in a much larger size:

Q: How do you get the colours to look so even and bold?
A: I've got a specific technique which involves moving the tip of the pen very slowly over the paper which allows the ink to gradually be soaked up by the paper which gives a very even spread of colour.

Q: Do you have a favourite drawing?
A: I like them all, though the piece above Pyramids is probably my favourite - it's also my signature piece :)
